A first trip to Costa Rica is the Central Valley, Arenal, and one beach, in 7 to 10 days. The drives take longer than the map says. San José to La Fortuna is about three hours. La Fortuna down to Quepos is most of a day. Two coasts and a volcano in one week is three trips.
Seven days is enough for the volcano and one coast, if you do not add a second coast. Ten days lets you add Monteverde or a slower beach without a midnight drive. Three days is the valley and one outing, such as Poás in the morning, not a tour of the country.
Count the travel days as days, not as gaps. The road up to Monteverde, along the lake, is often three to four hours and should be done in daylight. San José to Manuel Antonio is the easier beach drive, about two to three hours once you are out of the valley. San José to Puerto Viejo takes most of a day. Do not start any of those after dark. Getting around is why the map lies.
