The Central Pacific region of Costa Rica is a long swath of gorgeous land, from sublime coastline dotted with national parks to inland stretches of ranches, coffee plantations, small villages, and forested mountains.
This Pacific Coast runs from the southern Nicoya to the Panamanian border. It is the most varied shoreline in the country: a national park, a surf town, a marina, and primary forest on one drive. Montezuma, Santa Teresa, and Malpaís sit on the Nicoya. Jacó, Quepos, and Manuel Antonio are the easy reach from San José. South of there the road gets slower, through Dominical and south toward Golfito, the Osa Peninsula, and Pavones.
Best time to visit
Visit the Pacific Coast from December to April, flying into Juan Santamaría (SJO) and driving south. That is the dry window for Manuel Antonio and the road to Dominical. May to November is greener and quieter, and it is when the surf builds at Jacó.
How to get there
Jacó is about two hours from SJO. Quepos and Manuel Antonio are about three, Dominical closer to four. The Osa Peninsula is a long drive or a domestic flight to Puerto Jiménez or Golfito. Santa Teresa and Montezuma are easier by the Puntarenas ferry or a flight into Tambor.
How travelers use this coast
Jacó is the weekend beach. It is loud in high season and useful if you want a grocery store and a surf lesson on the same afternoon. Manuel Antonio is a short, famous park. Stay in Quepos or on the hill and treat the beach as a day, not a week. Dominical is slower. The Osa is a different trip: lodges, boats, and Corcovado, not a walkable grid of restaurants. Pavones is a point break with a small year-round community. Santa Teresa and Montezuma suit a longer stay if you can live with the last stretch of rough road. Tambor and Cabuya are the quiet stops between those two worlds.
Real estate along the coast
The market splits. Jacó, Quepos, and the hills above Manuel Antonio have condos, rental pools, and a record of resales. Los Sueños is the high end of that market, built around the marina rather than a town beach. Farther south, and on the southern Nicoya, you are buying privacy and a longer drive. Inventory is thinner, permits matter more, and rental income depends on a short high season. A managed condo near Jacó can carry a season. A house above Dominical often cannot.
