  • Sarchí oxcartsWest past Grecia, painters work in open shops and a giant cart fills the plaza. Walk the street and watch the brush. You need not buy.
  • Grecia metal churchGrecia's red church is iron panels bolted together, on the plaza, a drive west. Step in if the doors are open. A parish still uses it.
  • Atenas valley viewThe ridge past Grecia looks over the valley and, if it is clear, toward the Pacific slope. Stop on a wide shoulder. There is no trail.

The landscape is highland city, coffee hills, and volcano views. You are likely to see clay-colored thrushes, hummingbirds, parakeets, butterflies and the occasional sloth in the greenbelt. The plants around them are coffee, poró shade trees, gardens and remnant oak toward Poás.

Around Alajuela, yigüirros and parakeets are in the parks and the coffee edges at first light. A sloth in the greenbelt is luck. The square at noon is the city, not a wildlife walk.

In Alajuela, stay on the trail and do not feed what you came to see. That is the rule that keeps this place the way it is.

The climate is mild highland, a little warmer than San José. Temperatures are about 20–28°C. It is dry from December to April. Alajuela sits at 952 m (3,120 ft).
