- Heredia Central ParkThe small square faces the church, with the little fort tower beside it. Shade and a bench are the point. The tower is a landmark, not a climb.
- Inmaculada Concepción basilicaA stone front marks the parish on the square. Step in between services. It is not a ticketed museum, and it is not the iron church in Grecia.
- Barva VolcanoThe crater lake is a hike from the station above Barva, up a steep road. Mud and cloud forest are normal. You cannot drive to the rim as at Poás.
- Braulio Carrillo National ParkTrails in this park are wet even in a drier month. Use the marked path at the sector you entered. Do not wander; the highway is not a trail.
- Café BrittNear Barva, the coffee visit is a short drive and more of a show than a quiet small farm. You taste at the end. A couple of hours, then you go.
- Museum of Popular CultureAn adobe house in Santa Lucía shows old rural rooms and tools. It is small. Ask that morning if the gate is open; it does not keep capital hours.
- Barva colonial townNorth of the city, the old center is a church and a square. Coffee slopes start above the roofs. The crater lake is another, longer trip.
- Monte de la CruzPines and picnic tables sit high above town. Families fill it on weekends. The valley appears when cloud lifts; it is cooler than the square.
- Coffee farmsCoffee covers the slopes above the city. Visit a farm that expects you. Do not push a mill gate; the rows are visible from the mountain road.
- Zurquí tunnel viewpointThe bore under the pass is a highway, not a stop. You do not pull over inside it. For forest, use a park trail; trucks and fog own this road.
The landscape is coffee highlands, colonial town, and volcano slopes. You are likely to see hummingbirds, clay-colored thrushes, motmots, butterflies and quetzals higher on Barva. The plants around them are coffee, poró, oak and cloud-forest epiphytes toward Braulio Carrillo.
Around Heredia, hummingbirds are in the coffee shade at first light. Quetzals are higher on Barva, and not a sight from town. The city parks are thrushes, not cloud forest.
Braulio Carrillo National Park and the Barva Volcano sector, plus shade coffee on the working farms below.
In Heredia, stay on the trail and do not feed what you came to see. That is the rule that keeps this place the way it is.
The climate is mild and green. Temperatures are about 17–26°C. Cooler and wetter than the valley floor. Driest from December to April. Heredia sits at 1,150 m (3,770 ft).
Pack a light layer for after dark. The days do not need it. The countrywide calendar is in the best time to visit Costa Rica.
The airport for this region is Juan Santamaría in Alajuela. Once you are in the valley, San José traffic matters more than the kilometers.
Traffic decides the time, not the kilometers. A short hop can take an hour. Buses, shuttles, and rental cars are compared in getting around Costa Rica.
