• Atenas Central ParkThe square is church, benches, and people on errands. Use the shade when the road has been hot. It is town life, not a sight you plan around.
  • Coffee farmsThe hills are planted in coffee. A farm that expects you shows the rows and, in season, the mill. Two hours is plenty; picking is not every month.
  • Mountain viewsRoads above town open onto the valley. Stop only where the shoulder is wide. Morning is clearer; there is no single marked summit and no booth.
  • Poás Volcano day tripThe crater is a longer morning than from Alajuela. Leave early, stay at the rail, and do not walk to the lake. Cloud often beats a late start.
  • La Paz Waterfall GardensFalls and gardens near Vara Blanca are a real drive from here. Go early and walk down. If you only slow the car, you will miss the water.
  • Doka EstateThe estate is east, toward Sabanilla, not in town. You walk the coffee and taste it. Let the drive take the middle of the day, not a quick detour.
  • Zoo AveLa Garita is toward Alajuela, so the rescue park is a short hop. Walk shaded grounds. Birds fill the place; it is not a row of cages downtown.
  • Grecia metal churchGrecia is a short drive north. Bolted iron forms the red church on the plaza. Look from the square, and go in if a service is not using it.
  • Sarchí oxcartsSarchí sits beside Grecia, close enough for a morning. Shops face the street, and the giant cart is in the plaza. Watch the painters work.
  • Valley overlooksRidge stops show the Central Valley, not a peak. Late light is the reason to pull over. You get out of the car; there is no platform and no fee.
