A simple day starts at Heredia Central Park and Inmaculada Concepción basilica. If there is time for another stop, add Barva Volcano and Braulio Carrillo National Park. Café Britt and Museum of Popular Culture suit a longer stay, when you want more than the first view. This is not a checklist. Pick two, leave room to come back, and let the rest wait for another morning.
The landscape is coffee highlands, colonial town, and volcano slopes. You are likely to see hummingbirds, clay-colored thrushes, motmots, butterflies and quetzals higher on Barva. The plants around them are coffee, poró, oak and cloud-forest epiphytes toward Braulio Carrillo.
You do not need a separate tour to notice this. The animals show up on the walks between those stops, and the plants are the shade on the same paths. Early morning is when the birds and monkeys are easiest to hear. Go slower than the schedule suggests and you will see more than the list names.

For a visitor, that means using the official trails, keeping lights low where turtles nest, and choosing boats or guides that follow the reserve rules. The protection is why the town still looks like this. Treat the beach and the forest as the point of the trip, not as a backdrop for it.
The climate is mild and green. Temperatures are About 17–26°C. Cooler and wetter than the valley floor. Driest from December to April. Heredia sits at 1,150 m (3,770 ft). The airport for this region is Juan Santamaría in Alajuela. Once you are in the valley, San José traffic matters more than the kilometers. The last stretch is the slow part, so give it more time than the highway. Arriving before dark makes the first evening easier, especially on a dirt approach.
