If you are a nature lover and are looking for a place off the beaten track, head south from Montezuma, on the Peninsula of Nicoya, and follow the scenic dirt road that passes by steep-sloped tropical jungle with huge boulders covered by roots of strangler figs and vines. Reach the coast and continue on your way to Cabuya (which is the same road that heads to the Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve).

Take a pit stop at any of the small rivers that empty into the ocean that form natural pools large enough for swimming, or take a dip in Playa Las Manchas, a white-sand beach with clear turquoise water perfect for snorkeling.

Cabuya’s unique tourist attraction is an uninhabited island, only accessible at low tide, that was once used as the town cemetery, these shores are excellent for swimming and snorkeling.
River Lajas is another great spot for bird watching, and if you head upstream, there are more inviting private natural pools . Close to the river Lajas is a bay called Los Almendros that is considered a surfers paradise, or hike a little further to swim in Los Cedros beach.

Other amenities and activities include horseback riding, strolling on the beach, Sportfishing, kayaking, Bars, Restaurants, and more.

Shortly after the Rio Lajas bridge, you will spot an impressive natural monument: the Higuerón de Cabuya, a huge strangler fig. With a diameter of around 22 m and an altitude of almost 40 m, it is the largest of its kind in Costa Rica.
