Playa Guiones, Costa Rica

Upscale and on the more expensive side, Guiones is home to most of Nosara’s hotels, restaurants and businesses. This exclusive beach is especially tailored for those looking for some real peace and quiet

  • There are many surf schools on Playa Guiones, and it is a great place to learn to surf.

154 miles from San Jose, Playa Guiones is a sleepy beach town with the best surfing and snorkeling on Costa Rica’s central Pacific Coast, in the Province of Guanacaste. There are several surf shops where you can rent, buy or repair surfboards in case you didn’t bring yours! Waves are consistent year around!

Part of this beach belongs to the Ostional Wildlife Refuge (where you can observe the turtles as they lay their eggs between August and December), while the rest of this area has received a ‘Bandera Azul’ or Blue Flag of Ecology for maintaining high ecological standards.

Most accomodations and restaurants are located in the jungle instead of on the beach front, a wonderful place to kick back and relax while enjoying the breathtaking ocean views, spectacular sunsets and many distinct species of flora and fauna.

From Liberia, drive south towards Nicoya, pass through Hojancha and continue to Samara. In Samara, turn left towards Nosara (15 miles) until you finally reach Guiones. Bus transport, and domestic flights are also available, however, you must keep in mind that either way you will have to rent a car or take a taxi for the last 10 minutes of the ride.

Fun facts:

At low tide, the entire Guiones bay can be explored by bicycle or on foot.

The naturally occurring tropical dry forest of Guiones(one of the earth’s rarest ecosystems) keeps wildlife in their natural environment year round.
